Beyond Anxiety: An Unshakeable Confidence

Anxiety is one of the afflictions of our age. Lost in what could possibly happen, we lose touch with what is right now, and with how to meet situations simply and effectively. In addition to personal matters, the Covid pandemic, political divisiveness, economic strain and our increasing ecological collapse can further add to a state of fearful uncertainty and concern. This Day of Practice with Sangha Live founding teacher Martin Aylward explores the nature, phenomenology and understanding of anxiety.

Befriending Anxiety

Martin talks about recognizing and befriending anxiety through gentle curiosity and creating conditions where anxiety is not being fed. Understanding our patterning and recognizing the origins of anxiety can lead to the emergence of unshakable confidence, allowing us to face anything in life with openness of heart and freeness of mind.

Discharging Anxiety

Martin leads a guided meditation session, encouraging us to be kind, gentle, and forgiving towards ourselves during the practice. We relax into anxiety – stress, discomfort, tension, fear – by focusing our attention and awareness on the breath and body.

Let It Be

Martin discusses the importance of being present and responsive to our experience rather than rehearsing or overthinking conversations and situations. Martin shares his insights into the importance of embodying ease and gentleness to parent anxiety, shifting the power dynamic to allow for a more peaceful presence.

Gentle Breath and Body

Martin leads a guided meditation where we are invited to ground ourselves in the present moment through focusing on connecting with the body and breath. We practice expanding attention into the whole body, which helps to cultivate a sense of calm and gentleness which extends beyond the sitting cushion.

Unshakeable Confidence

Martin discusses the importance of attending to anxiety by giving ways to apply formal meditation practices to the general content of experiences, such as emphasizing softness or spaciousness. We explore how to listen to and learn from the story anxiety tells us and the fear that may arise within us.
