Life seems an inevitable movement in the field of time until death interrupts.
Amidst the myriad number of events, welcome and unwelcome, we hastily conclude the way we perceive reveals the way things are.
Humanity shares the common experience that whatever arises, stays and passes giving rise to something else. The last outbreath of our existence will give rise to death.
Insight meditators give much important time to seeing anicca (lit not permanent).
There are three primary expressions the practice. It is worthwhile reflecting on all three as major features of a practice of meditating for insights.
- We witness the natural arising, staying and passing of mental/material phenomena.
- We witness experiences, inner or outer, and we see the necessity to apply change to whatever presents itself to dissolve any
- We witness what arises, stays and passes, and then rearises, so we make the decision to move on from that.
Excessive reliance on the first practice can result in a passive, equanimous mind lacking the empowerment for making significant change that numbers two and three makes clear.
We base our views on notions of time, of divisions of past, present and future.
We think we are wired this way. That’s what we think.
Thought is unreliable. Receptivity outside the tiny construction of thought matters.
Some meditators have spent much time on seeing anicca change at the moment-to-level so they have concluded anicca reveals the ultimate reality.
Anicca is a conventional truth born of perceptions dependent on grasping of sense objects and states of mind.
