Liberation and the Instincts: Exploring the Survival, Sexual and Social Drives

Short Course

Take an evolutionary journey through human conditioning, and beyond!

Our human experience inevitably includes the survival, sexual and social drives; biological imperatives which are more primal than our psychological and emotional processes, yet are often overlooked in dharma practice.

In this on-demand course, we take a deep dive into our instinctual inheritance and functioning… An evolutionary journey through human conditioning, and beyond!

Course Content

The Aliveness of This Body

The Aliveness of This Body

To open, Martin discusses the theme of survival, social and sexual drives and their relevance to human evolution. He explores the history of this phenomenon and encourages us to listen from an embodied place, connecting our own experience with the teaching. Together we explore the different drives in daily life and how they influence our psychological, emotional and social realms.

Duration: 33 minutes

Exploring the Survival Drive

Settling into Embodied Presence

Martin guides us in an embodied meditation practice that focuses on the evolutionary and sensory wisdom of the body, here and now. We explore the relationship between sufficiency, deficiency, and the need for completion and relaxation to cultivate a more peaceful and fulfilling state of mind.

Duration: 37 minutes

Understanding the Sexual Drive

The Nourishment of Drives

Together we explore the physical sensation of drives and emotions. Martin elaborates on our primary sexual and social drives, and discusses the significance of nurturing a sense of inner ease and comfort as we navigate them. We are invited to accept our drives, treating ourselves with love and kindness as we would a beloved partner.

Duration: 42 minutes

Navigating the Social Drive

Healing Our Primal Wounds

Martin hosts a Q&A, providing insightful guidance to students who ask him how to apply these practices to healing from deeply painful experiences.

Duration: 45 minutes
